The company’s historic 19th-century manufacturing facilities in Waltham, Massachusetts have been preserved as the American Waltham Watch Company Historic District. Their revolutionary business plan was to manufacture the movement parts of watches so precisely that they would become fully interchangeable. Based upon the experience of earlier failed trials, Howard and Dennison eventually perfected and patented their precision watch making machines, creating what has been called the American System of Watch Manufacturing. The original name of the company, which began operations in , is unclear. Some sources say the name was the “American Horologe Company”. However, in , Dennison stated that the first company name was the Warren Manufacturing Company, named for General Warren of Roxbury , a famous soldier of the War of Independence. The word “watch” was specifically omitted to retain secrecy of the novel operation.

Approximately The crystal glass was secured by a bezel and gaskets to seal the movement against dust. The winding and setting crown was positioned adjacent to the quick set button. The dial had a lusterless black finish with printed indexes and numbers. A Munsell Green paint was used on the odd-hour numerals, minute indexes, and the civil date and numerals indexes. A yellow fluorescent material was used on the eve-hour indexes and numbers and the diamond-shaped, odd-hour indexes.
Respectively, the civil date had the words 8-days and Civil Date in green; the hour, minute, and sweep second hands were also painted with yellow fluorescent material. The civil date, day sub-dial was located at the center of the main dial, with numerals and indexes.

Click here to view additional historical photos of the Waltham factory. Their vision was to form a watch company that could produce high-quality watches at a lower cost using interchangeable parts. With financial backing from Samuel Curtis, of small-arms manufacturing fame, the watch production began in , and the first small group of watches were finished in late The first watches produced went to officials of the company, and it was not until that the first watches were offered for sale to the public.
Problems were encountered with the new production methods. The company was exploring innovative new ideas in watch manufacturing, such as using jewels, making enamel dials, and producing plates with a high-level of finish which required extensive tooling and resulted in a great financial burden.

Grandfather clocks, also called longcase clocks by horologists, were invented after Dutchman Christiaan Huygens applied a pendulum as a clock-winding device in But it wasn’t until about when clockmakers mastered the workings of the pendulum for accurate timekeeping in conjunction with an anchor escapement — the mechanical device that gives a pendulum its swing. If you own a longcase clock, determining its age can tell you how much it is worth. After , most clocks were mass-produced by German and American manufacturers, effectively putting an end to the valuable custom-made grandfather clocks.
English clockmakers crafted clocks with brass dials from about to Early brass-dial grandfather clocks had only one clock hand, since to clock owners, the hour of the day was more important than minutes. By , grandfather clocks with two hands began showing up in England, even though outlying villages and country regions still had clockmakers crafting clocks with only the hour hand. From through , brass dials became more ornate and contained other features such as second hands, date hands and wheels.
Grandfather clocks with moon dials appeared in clocks made from through While individual features alone are not enough to determine the age of a grandfather clock, combining different elements such as its face, hands, spandrels — the ornamentation near the clock face — and movement pillars can lock in its age.
Many stopped clocks can be easily repaired by the owner. Here is a list of common problems that are simple to repair. Although the following instructions specifically apply to antique British clocks, they will also work for many other clocks. Keep in mind that while some repairs can be repaired easily, sometimes it is best to let an expert repair your clock to help avoid additional damage.

The humble date is one of the most ubiquitous complications in all of horology, so much so that it is almost taken for granted. In this installment of Complications , we look at when dates first appeared, why they have taken over to such an extent, and a few of the more common variations out there. Calendar complications had existed in pocket watches since the late 19th century, but the first patents for a calendar wristwatch were submitted in by watchmaker A.
Hammerly from the La Chaux-de-Fonds region of Switzerland. By the end of the decade this movement was found in wristwatches from H. Moser and Waltham, among others. Around the same time, Movado began work producing a wristwatch with digital date display — closer to a modern date window display. However, due to the smaller size of watches at that time, the date display may have been difficult to read in many cases. The next major advancement in the date complication arguably took place in when Hans Wilsdorf introduced the Rolex Datejust, claiming it to be the first wristwatch with a self-changing date.
This was improved further in with the date change also becoming instantaneous at midnight rather than a slow-roll over a prolonged period.

This page has been archived and is no longer updated. Despite seeming like a relatively stable place, the Earth’s surface has changed dramatically over the past 4. Mountains have been built and eroded, continents and oceans have moved great distances, and the Earth has fluctuated from being extremely cold and almost completely covered with ice to being very warm and ice-free. These changes typically occur so slowly that they are barely detectable over the span of a human life, yet even at this instant, the Earth’s surface is moving and changing.
As these changes have occurred, organisms have evolved, and remnants of some have been preserved as fossils. A fossil can be studied to determine what kind of organism it represents, how the organism lived, and how it was preserved. However, by itself a fossil has little meaning unless it is placed within some context.
The age of the fossil must be determined so it can be compared to other fossil species from the same time period. Understanding the ages of related fossil species helps scientists piece together the evolutionary history of a group of organisms. For example, based on the primate fossil record, scientists know that living primates evolved from fossil primates and that this evolutionary history took tens of millions of years. By comparing fossils of different primate species, scientists can examine how features changed and how primates evolved through time.
However, the age of each fossil primate needs to be determined so that fossils of the same age found in different parts of the world and fossils of different ages can be compared. There are three general approaches that allow scientists to date geological materials and answer the question: “How old is this fossil?
Relative dating puts geologic events in chronological order without requiring that a specific numerical age be assigned to each event.
